Wisconsin law only allows you to tan once every 24 hours.

Do I get Vitamin D from tanning?

UV light is the main source of Vitamin D for humans. UV light causes the skin to create pre-vitamin D, which, in turn, makes Vitamin D that is necessary for good health, bone formation and repair, and the absorption of calcium and phosphorous in the body. The presence of Vitamin D in the body can decrease the risks of developing breast, colon, prostrate and ovarian cancers!

Why do some people notice many white spots after getting a tan?

What is tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor (say "TIH-nee-uh VER-sih-kuh-ler") is a fungal infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur. This yeast is normally found on human skin and only becomes troublesome under certain circumstances, such as a warm and humid environment. It causes many small, flat spots on the skin. The spots can be flaky or mildly itchy. The many small spots may blend into large patchy areas, usually on the oily parts of the upper body like the chest and back. The spots can be either lighter or darker than the skin around them. In people with dark skin tones, pigmentary changes such as hypopigmentation (loss of color) are common, while in those with lighter skin color, hyperpigmentation (increase in skin color) are more common.

What causes tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is caused by a fungus. This fungus lives all around us, including on the skin. Normally, everyday washing and showering removes dead skin and fungi (more than one fungus). But in hot and humid weather, such as during the summer or in tropical areas, fungi may grow more rapidly. As these fungi grow in number, their natural balance on the skin is affected, the normal color of the skin changes, and spots appear. Tanning will make the condition more obvious. People with oily skin, especially teens and young adults, are more likely to get tinea versicolor. Tinea versicolor usually is less likely to occur as you age, when the skin becomes less oily. It does not spread from person to person. Other things that increase your chance of getting tinea versicolor include having an impaired immune system, which cam occur during pregnancy or some form of illness and using certain medicines, such as corticosteroids, antibiotics or birth control pills.

How is it treated?

The infection is easily treated with skin creams, shampoos, or solutions. But not everyone chooses to get treatment. If the infection is severe or if it covers large areas of your body, returns often, or does not get better with skin care, your doctor may prescribe antifungal pills. Antifungal pills cannot be taken by some people, especially those with liver or heart problems. You may have blood tests so your doctor can check to make sure your kidneys and liver are working okay. Treatment kills the fungi quickly, but it can take months for the spots to disappear and for your skin color to return to normal. Although it is easily treated, the infection often returns within 1 to 2 years.

Can tinea versicolor be prevented?

To prevent tinea versicolor from returning, use skin creams, shampoos, or solutions at least once a month. Ask your doctor if you should use them more often. Some doctors believe fungi that remain in clothing may cause the infection to return. Normal washing and cleaning is usually effective in removing fungi from clothes. But for persistent tinea versicolor, you may need to dry-clean your clothes or wash them in the hottest possible water.

How often do I need to tan to maintain my tan?

The number of times you need to tan to maintain your color depends on which level you are tanning in, the lotion you use, and how well your skin tans. The average person usually tans 2-3 times per week to maintain their color.

Does tanning help treat depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Wisconsin averages 90 sunny days per year. There exists a growing collection of scientific evidence which indicates that some people actually require more light exposure in order to function properly. Exposure to bright light, such as that emitted by the mid-day summer sun, causes the brain to suppress the release of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin acts as a depressant in the body if generated during the daytime. Thus, when affected people are exposed to longer hours of bright light, they feel happier, euphoric and more able to enjoy life. Bright light sources emitting only visible light, are now frequently used to successfully treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Sub-syndromal Seasonal Affective Disorder (SSAD).

What is the minimum age to tan in a UV tanning bed?

Wisconsin State Law states that the minimum age to tan in a UV tanning bed is 16. You must bring in a valid Driver's License or a copy of your birth certificate. We are very strict in following this state law and if you do not have one of the above items, you will not be allowed to sign up at Always Sunny On Main

It is suggested that expecting mothers wait until after the first trimester to use any type of self-tanners. Always Sunny On Main offers nose filters as extra precautions while spray tanning once in to your second or third trimester. Due to hypersensitivity during pregnancy it might be possible that these self-tanners could cause skin irritation. A test should be done in an unnoticeable area 24 hours before a full spray. Please consult your physician before any spray tan appointment.

Is it safe to spray tan while breastfeeding?

Yes, but obviously do not spray the breast area. It is recommended you wear a top (bra, bandeau, swimsuit, etc.) and also a nose filter to avoid inhalation.

Can I get a spray tan before a tattoo appointment?

No. The skin needs to be clean for a tattoo and the tattoo artist will need to remove the tan, leaving it blotchy.

Can I get a spray tan right after a tattoo?

If you have a new tattoo it’s best to wait until it’s fully healed before having a spray tan. If you must have a spray tan, you can cover the tattoo with a sticker or other full barrier to protect the colors.

How long does a spray tan last?

On average, 7-10 days with proper after care.
